Youth without family support face unique challenges on the road to adulthood. Many have experienced years of abuse and neglect, while others lost loving parents to illness or accidents. While foster care tries to provide a stable environment, for many it is a series of group homes and shelters, leaving many foster youth ill-equipped for life on their own. The Orphan Fund offers several scholarship opportunities for this unique population that are in vocational training, community college, or undergraduates.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, have a family adjusted gross income of $30,000 or less, demonstrate unmet financial need of at least $1,000 after the financial aid award package has been determined and have a grade point average between 2.5 and 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Since its founding in 1972, the JVS Community Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $2.7 million to more than 2,400 students. Today’s recipients are pursuing undergraduate and graduate studies colleges and universities nationwide. Due to donor designation, the criteria is restricted to financially needy Jewish students who are legal and permanent residents of Los Angeles County. To qualify for scholarships, students must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form with their schools, maintain a nimimum GPA of 2.5 or higher and be a full-time student attending an accredited learning institution in the U.S.
