Selection Criteria for Change a Life Foundation Scholars

12th grade students enrolling in a four-year College or University with full-time status (minimum 12 units) may request a scholarship of up to $5,000. Applicants must meet these criteria:

  • Weighted Grade Point Average of 3.5 or above from ninth grade to first semester of 12th grade
  • Minimum SAT score of 1,500 or ACT score of 21
  • Enrolled in and/or passed advanced placement course or community college courses
  • Family income is below the HUD income guidelines
  • U.S. Citizen or permanent legal resident with green card
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills and responsibility (leadership/responsibility skills should be evident in the student essays and honor/activities/community service portion of the application)
  • Evidence of extracurricular activities (school/community involvement/employment)
  • A minimum of 40 hours of community service from ninth grade to first semester of 12th grade
  • Must graduate from an approved Change a Life Foundation public high school within the boundaries of: Los Angeles County, San Diego County and Orange County

Selection Criteria for Change a Life Foundation Emancipated/Formerly Foster Youth Scholars

Emancipated, college-bound, former foster youth who are students throughout the State of California may apply for a Change a Life Foundation Scholarship of up to $5,000. Applicants must meet this criteria:

  • 12th grade student enrolling in a four-year College or University, OR student currently attending a California Community College may apply when transferring to a four-year College or University (MUST have completed the number of units required, eligible/ready to transfer Fall 2017)
  • Weighted Grade Point Average of 2.75 or above from ninth grade to first semester of 12th grade, or 2.5 cumulative GPA from a Community College
  • Minimum SAT score of 1,350 (not applicable for transfer students)
  • Family income is below the HUD income guidelines (Please note that income information of parents or foster parents of emancipated youth is not required.)
  • U.S. Citizen or permanent legal resident with a green card
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills and responsibility (leadership/responsibility skills should be evident in the student essays and honor/activities/community service portion of the application)
  • Evidence of extracurricular activities (school/community involvement/employment)
  • Community Service
  • Must apply through our emancipated youth scholarship program, which is available to former foster youth throughout California

Application Procedure

178 5 14 16 Change A LifeApplications and all supplemental materials must be submitted online to Change a Life Foundation at the close of business, no later than 5:00 pm on March 16, 2016. Late applications will not be considered.

Eligible candidates may apply for a scholarship by completing the online application and uploading all supplemental information.

 

Required Supplemental Information

  1. Two letters of recommendation from a teacher, college/guidance counselor, or mentor
  2. Digital photograph of applicant, preferably a headshot
  3. Transcript of grades
  4. Electronic Student Aid Report (SAR)
  5. SAT and/or ACT score verification

Documents Required Before Scholarships Can Be Funded

All Scholars 15 WebSelected Scholarship recipients will be notified via United States postal mail in May 2017 of award. Once scholars are notified, they must complete a scholarship contract which is due by July 24, 2017, and upload the following documents in order for Change a Life Foundation to release scholarship funds.

  1. Copy of financial aid award information from the university to be attended
  2. Cost of attendance provided by the university with expense budget breakout for entire year
  3. Copy of health insurance fee verification from university
  4. Thank you letter addressed to Change a Life Foundation board of directors
  5. Copy of university acceptance letter

Change a Life Foundation sends scholarship award checks directly to the university on behalf of scholarship recipients. Scholarships are restricted to the following expenses: tuition, housing and meal plan, books and health insurance.

The Change a Life Foundation provides an opportunity for a limited number of 2016 scholarship recipients to reapply for a second year of funding. The 2017 Scholarship Renewal is available for up to $2,500 per scholar for Change a Life Scholarship recipients who are in their second year of enrollment with full-time status at a four-year University.

Reapplicants must be invited by the Foundation in order for the reapplication to be considered for scholarship funds.

To be considered for this scholarship, you must complete the Scholarship Renewal Application and upload the required documents. The required documents are:

  1. Current university transcript
  2. Financial aid award summary

The deadline for scholarship renewal submission is July 24, 2017. Renewal forms will be available to the selected scholars online.

The minimum requirements for eligibility for receiving a scholarship renewal for 2017-2018 are:

  • Received a Change a Life Scholarship in 2016
  • Cumulative 2.5 GPA
  • Financial Need (verifiable)
  • Enrolled as a full-time student (entire 2016/2017 academic year, minimum 12 units both semesters)
  • Attending a four-year university in 2017-2018

Applications will be evaluated on academic achievement, financial need and the quality of the essay. If you are selected for renewal, a scholarship renewal award letter will be sent by August 2017. The Renewal Scholarship Award checks will be sent directly to the financial aid office at the university to be applied to the awardee’s student account.

 

Important Note: Scholarship Awards are considered pending until all required information is received and financial need is verified and confirmed by Change a Life Foundation. Scholarship checks will be sent to the university of the student’s choice in August 2017 after required documents are received and processed by Change a Life Foundation. It is possible a student would be denied a Change a Life Foundation scholarship or have the amount reduced based upon the lack of unmet need status, as shown in their financial aid package.
